What’s Open in NYC on New Year’s Day

The Times Square ball has dropped and the new year is here. What now? While you will be right in assuming that many attractions are closed on January 1st, there’s still plenty to do on New Year’s Day. Grab a coffee or hot chocolate and begin the year exploring New York.

Holiday Markets

New York’s holiday markets don’t close this day. Before you feel the holiday spirit wane, take a walk to Bryant Park’s Winter Village or The Shops at Columbus Circle. For more seasonal attractions, read our post on the best places to visit in NYC during the holidays

Ice Skating

Stop the cold from getting to you by practicing a winter sport. Ice-skating is a favorite winter pastime in New York. Check out the Rockefeller Center ice rink or the free-admission rink at Bryant Park. If you want a bigger alternative, Wollman Rink in Central Park is a must.

Holiday Train Show

The New York Botanical Garden is the perfect place to spend the first day of the year. The popular Holiday Train Show remains on display the first week of January. See tiny and intricate models of old and new trains and New York landmarks. Top it off exploring the gardens that are at the best in winter.

Believe it or not, many stores are open on New Year’s Day. Treat yourself to a New Year’s gift at Macy’s Herald Square or the mall at Hudson Yards. If you come with the little ones, take them to Dylan’s Candy Bar or FAO Schwarz. Read more on our post of family-friendly attractions in New York.

Go Museum Hopping

January 1st is a perfect day to visit a museum on your bucket list. Some of the quintessential NYC museums like the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum or the American Museum of Natural History are open. Are you looking for some great views? Then, head to the One World Observatory.
