New York City 4th of July Events Guide

Before NYC’s summer season officially kicks into gear, celebrate America’s birthday with fireworks displays, American eats, and a long weekend enjoying everything the city has to offer. Read on for our NYC 4th of July picks.

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks

The 4th of July in NYC was already a cause of celebration, but the day was set to be even more festive this year thanks to the return of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks. The nation’s largest fireworks show will illuminate the Big Apple from the East River with a colorful display of pyrotechnics. The free public event begins at 8 p.m.

See the fireworks from new heights at the One World Observatory in Manhattan’s Financial District. The Observatory is throwing a patriotic celebration 102 floors above the city with unparalleled views and unlimited American fare, passed canapes, sweets, and premium cocktails.

Fourth of July Block Party

Head to the Skyline Drive-In in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood for a special 4th of July 21+ bash featuring a stellar DJ lineup, beer garden, food trucks, and incredible views of the Manhattan skyline. Stick around until 9:15 p.m. to see the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks over the water. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog-Eating Contest

Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog-Eating returns to Coney Island this year. Taking place near Nathan’s flagship store at Maimonides Park, the 106th installment is free on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the women's competition kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by the men at 12:30 p.m. Snag tickets at MajorLeagueEating.com. Stick around for the Coney Island 4th of July Fireworks show which is also making a comeback this year.

American Eats

Celebrate the 4th of July with all-American dishes at NYC’s bars and restaurants. While places like American Brass in Long Island City, The Sentry atop the American Copper Buildings, and The Empire Room on the Penthouse Floor of 230 Fifth are throwing cosmopolitan 4th of July receptions of their own, there are plenty of casual comfort food spots around the city. Find classic NYC-style diner fare at Westway Diner or Joe Junior and big plates of BBQ favorites at Dallas BBQ, Hill Country Barbeque Market, and Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque, all located in Manhattan.
